How to Enter

1.

The NPPA Multimedia Immersion Workshop is holding a mobile photo contest. Take and edit your image with Instagram (or whatever other mobile image editing tools you'd like). Your image must express “A Moment in Time.” Take that direction as you will. It is broad intentionally to encourage creativity.

2.

Submit up to 3 images publicly to Instagram. Please make sure that each image has a caption and the meta information associated with it, such as "GEOTAGGED" and "TWITTER.".

3.

Upload the image to Instagram with the following hashtags: #micuse #nppa (In order to enter the contest judging the photos must be uploaded to Instagram with these hashtags #micuse #nppa by midnight, Sunday, April 22, 2012.)

1st place - A Think Tank Photo Shapeshifter Backpack, a free, one-year membership to the National Press Photographers Association and a copy of Instadesk for OSX

Deadline
Contest judging will take place soon after the deadline of midnight, Sunday, April 22, 2012. Winners will be notified through Twitter. A individual may submit only 3 images to the contest.
Requirements
All images must have been shot on a mobile device during the week of Monday, April 16, 2012 to Sunday, April 22, 2012 and all color toning must be done using that same device.
Hashtags
All entries must be entered via Instagram with the appropriate hashtags (#micuse #nppa). Any entry without the appropriate hashtags will be disqualified.

Richard Koci Hernandez

Richard Koci Hernandez is an Emmy Award winning visual journalist with 20 years of experience. In 2007 after taking his first mobile photograph, he was hooked on the medium's potential and immediacy. Recently, he joined the faculty at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism where he teaches various New Media courses, including Mobile Reporting. Koci Hernandez presented a mobile photography Master Class at the TED2012 conference and created an online iPhoneography course at Lynda.com. He shares is his work on Instagram, where he has gained over 90,000 followers and produces a blog on mobile photography called lofimode.com

Meredith Birkett

Meredith Birkett is a senior multimedia editor for special projects at MSNBC.com, a general news web site seen by more than 37 million unique users each month. Birkett has worked at MSNBC.com for nine years. In this role, Meredith works as a liaison with freelancers, picture agencies and staff multimedia journalists to produce multimedia projects across all sections of MSNBC.com. Seth Gitner

Seth Gitner is an Assistant Professor of Newspaper and Online Journalism at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. Previously he was the multimedia editor for The Roanoke Times/roanoke.com in Roanoke, Va. Before entering the online news side of journalism, Seth was a photojournalist for 10 years. Each month he writes a column for the National Press Photographers Association's News Photographer Magazine called Multimedia Moments. Gitner's multimedia storytelling has been recognized by both the Pictures of the Year International Contest and the NPPA Best of Photojournalism Contest.

Will Sullivan

Will Sullivan is the Director of Mobile News for Lee Enterprises Inc. and was previously a 2010-2011 Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Fellow at the University of Missouri, where he studied mobile, tablet and emerging technologies. Before that, he was the Interactive Director of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch where he lead the organization's mobile, social and multimedia initiatives. Sullivan was recently selected by Editor and Publisher as one of the "25 under 35" innovative leaders in modern journalism and he's won more than a dozen professional awards from organizations including the Online News Association, Society for News Design and National Press Photographers Association.

Multimedia Immersion Workshop

The Multimedia Immersion in Syracuse, NY will be held May 15 to 19, 2012, it is an intense, five-day, hands-on training workshop for visual journalists looking to expand and grow their multimedia skillsets using the latest technology, that is run by The National Press Photographers Association. Our focus is on mixing photos, video and audio content and editing them into multimedia presentations. To see work produced by particpants from the past 5 workshops go to our Vimeo Channel.

Our previous students have ranged from multiple Pulitzer Prize Winners, Best of Photojournalism winners, the current White House Photographer, academics, editors, students, working professionals and freelancers all looking to supercharge their careers.

Unlike other multimedia training workshops, we provide the most personalized training experience with the lowest student-to-teacher ratio (with about 20 coaches for 40 students). Students will be personally coached by industry leaders and the best educators in the country.
